Anti-Slip Stair Treads & Noses

GRP anti-slip treads provide a quick and effective solution to worn slippery and uneven steps; they are a robust, durable and extremely slip resistant product. Available in any RAL colour with optional contrasting nose detail (usually high visibility white or yellow – luminescent colours available too). An ideal solution to Health & Safety problems.

Installing these hard wearing anti-slip treads is quite simple using adhesive and /or mechanical fixings such as screws or bolts. Each installation will have its own criteria but there are a number of operations and procedures that are applicable in all instances. For more details download our PDF: An Installation Guide.

Smyth Composites have developed a unique way of displaying messages on stair treads and flooring where the message is an integral part of the product not just painted on post production. This means the message will remain in place and will not wear off – even after many years.  For more information on these “Message Treads” please contact us.

Premier Treads

Smyth Composites are leading the industry with the new “Premier Tread”. When “Standard” treads are required to have a contrasting nose, a pigmented gel coat is painted on top of the main plate. To produce “Premier” treads the whole nose area is pigmented right through during production. This means that as the nose area wears down (albeit after many years) the “Premier Tread” retains its contrasting colour.

After researching many forms of grit, Smyth Composites elected to use Fused Alumina due to its superior qualities and suitability for the anti-slip applications. Other types such as Bauxite or Quartz are available by special order. The Fused Alumina is available in a variety of grades:

Ultra-Fine (Barefoot), Fine, Medium, Coarse, Ultra-Coarse

Panel Size and Thickness

Panels can be manufactured to any length but with a width restriction of 1500mm. Standard product range can be manufactured to literally any thickness from 2mm upward. As this is a handmade product, containing various raw materials, tolerances apply to both size and thickness which may vary depending on the specifications ordered.  Occasionally we can accommodate “oversized specials” – please contact us for details.

Fire Resistance

Products can be manufactured to either:

  • General Purpose (GP grade)

MV Hebridean Isles

Smyth Composites were contacted by a crew member of MV Hebridean Isles who was responsible for a project to replace the old worn stair treads throughout the ship. He’d previously contacted several other companies but wasn’t impressed with the quality of their product or the prices offered!

After receiving samples of our Standard and Premier Stair Treads, and on hearing our very competitive prices, he decided to order enough Premier Treads to complete 2 stairways on a trial basis. After a successful installation and trial period enough treads were ordered to complete a further 6 stairways.

Smyth Composites are delighted to have supplied these anti-slip stair treads to MV Hebridean Isles and look forward to supplying her sister ships and those of other companies going forward.

These are normally supplied with a medium grit finish but for areas where oil spills are likely coarse grit is utilised.
