Flood Defence System

Flood Defence Systems

THE PROBLEM - FLOODING!!!

Whatever the reasons – Global Warming, CO2 Emissions, Jetstream drift etc – there can be no doubt flooding is happening more often in recent times, usually with disastrous effects. In 2007 insurance companies paid £ billions to stricken home owners and businesses. Today many properties are uninsurable while utilities such as electricity and water face huge investment costs to defend installations. Governments throughout the world are committed to resolving this problem for which there are few answers.

ONE SOLUTION - FLOODAM FLOOD DEFENCE SYSTEM !!!

Smyth Composites Ltd offers the Floodam Flood Defence Systems (patents applied for) as a means to minimising such disasters.

The objective of any flood defence system is to prevent water reaching selected areas by confining  it to within its usual boundaries. This can be achieved by installing permanent dams, walls, riverbanks etc. but these are often impractical for a variety of reasons.

The Floodam solutions have the outward appearance of a ground level path or walkway. However, when flooding occurs these quickly convert to rigid, vertical flood barriers which automatically rise up from below the walkway without power, plant or manual intervention.

 INSTALLATIONS:
 1.Riverside
 2. Lakeside
 3. Tidal
 4. Flood Plain (Retention)
 5. Tank Leakage Retention (Bunds)
 6. Water Storage
 7. Driveways, Entries
In other words, to make it work..............
 *** just add water ***

Floodam
is permanently installed in a risk area e.g. along a low level river bank. It relies on flotation systems housed in a continuous chamber covered over by lightweight, high strength composite panels. These may be used as a footpath/road during normal conditions but become a vital component in the raised defence barrier during flooding.

The operation is simple! Rising flood water enters the chamber at low level points. This raises the flotation devices which in turn raise the hinged cover panels until a barrier of predetermined height - usually 1 to 2 metres is reached.

Two main systems are available:

The Trench Wall requires a trench of a depth roughly equivalent to the raised wall height.

The Double Wall needs minimal excavation and, in some cases such as driveways, entry points etc can be surface mounted acting as a ‘Sleeping Policeman’ when not employed in Flood Defence.

WANT TO KEEP LIQUID IN ?
Environmental and Health and Safety regulations often insist on the installation of bunds around large tanks of liquid to contain potential leakage. Essential as these walls are they can restrict site movement and access. Floodam might just be the solution – rising from ground level only when leakage occurs. The system can be adapted to resist a wide range of chemicals.

We have fully operating test units at our factories in Carnoustie, Scotland (see Photos) – contact us to arrange a visit and demonstration.
